Half-time Football 2006 - 2010

For the past five years the club has welcomed thousands of boys and girls to play at Half-time of Drogheda United’s home games.

The experience of playing at Hunky Dory’s Park (or Dalymount for the European games in ‘06,’07 and ‘08) is proving to be as popular as ever this season. Despite the club’s difficulties over the past two seasons, clubs and schools continue to show huge interest in playing at Half-Time with most slots booked out months in advance. Every effort is made to cater for an equal mix of teams, from the town of Drogheda and the surrounding hinterland of Louth, Meath and North County Dublin.

The opportunity of playing in front of a big crowd on such a superb playing surface is perhaps the most popular reason for the success of the club’s link with the local football community. The chance to meet some of the Drogs players or the possibility of being scouted adds further to the excitement! The Drogs fans and many of the visiting supporters all play a huge part in welcoming the teams onto the pitch and applauding their efforts throughout.

Other League of Ireland clubs have tried various half-time activities such as the Crossbar Challenge or Penalty Shootouts but the feedback we receive is that the half-time game of football is easily the most popular activity in Drogheda. Our club website (Community section) features many of this season’s Half-Time teams, courtesy of our webmaster Alan McDonnell. I would also like to thank photographers Larry McQuillan and Thos Caffrey, Matt Hanlon, Terry Collins, Martin Holland and Frank Hickey for their assistance over the past five years.
