The Drogs got off to a winning start in this season’s Under 19 League, when they defeated Letterkenny Rovers 3-0. Scoring from a Fionn Reilly corner in the 4th minute, they dominated play from there on, but it took until the 73rd minute to put the result beyond doubt, when sub Ollie Hamzat broke through the middle and rounded the keeper expertly to place the ball in the empty net.
The Drogs started brightly and created many chances in the first half, the first being in the 4th minute when Captain Dominic Mahon headed in from a Fionn Reilly corner. The visitors defence gave away plenty of frees in trying to keep the Drogs out and Fionn Reilly’s goal-bound dead ball was brilliantly turned over by the visiting keeper in the 19th minute. Ciaran Cluskey Kelly had some of the Drogs best chances in the 20th minute when he shot wide from close in and on 34 he struck the bar with a great header.
At half time, despite dominating, the Drogs went in 1-0 up and the longer we went on without scoring, the more likely the visitors looked like equalising. Manager Darius Kieran rang the changes as the second half progressed and with the introduction of Shane Freeman and Ollie Hamzat on 70 mins, the Drogs took charge of the match. Ollie broke through middle on 73 and showed great composure to wrong-foot the keeper and slide the ball into the empty net.
On 88 minutes, a visitors defender picked up his second yellow card and went for an early sauna. From Shaun Bannon’s resultant free, Ollie pounced on a loose ball and expertly chipped the keeper for number three.
All in all, a good start, and it gives us plenty to look forward to in what will be a long league campaign.
