Drogheda United suffered their first league defeat of the season as they went down 3-0 to Shelbourne at Tolka Park.
Drogheda United manager Pete Mahon made two changes from the side that drew 2-2 with Athlone Town as Lloyd Buckley and Derek Doyle replaced the injured pair of Colm Deasy and Jake Hyland.
The game was barely four minutes old when Shels hit the front as Soidq Oguntola picked out Jamie Doyle on the wing and he cut inside before firing an unstoppable strike into the top corner from 25 yards.
The visitors initially responded well to the set back and were unfortunate not to level matters when a fine passing move saw the ball fall to the feet of Eoin Kirwan on the edge of the box but his goal bound effort was deflected behind for a corner.
Shelbourne doubled their advantage against the run of play on 17 minutes as a direct ball into the Drogheda box wasn’t properly cleared and the loss ball was bundled home as Lorcan Shannon and Gavin Boyne combined for the latter to score.
Drogheda came close to pulling a goal back on the half hour mark as Kirwan again found space just outside the box and his fierce drive flew past Greg Murray but cannoned off the inside of the box and into the grateful arms of the Shels Keeper.
United dominated the early goings of the second half and it was once again Kirwan who looked the most likely to score as he controlled Stephen Dunne’s deep cross but his shot from a narrow angle was well held by Murray.
Dunne was again the architect for Drogheda as he swung in another cross on the overlap and his delivery found Aaron Ashe but his header was just wide of the top corner.
The game was effectively over with 15 minutes left to play as Shels scored a third when Jamie English fed Shannon down the right and his cross was fired past Patrick Dunican by the onrushing Doyle for his second of the game.
Drogheda will go in search of their first win in four league games when they host Cabinteely at United Park this Friday.
