Drogheda United secured their first derby win of the season in Oriel Park tonight with a convincing 1-2 defeat of neighbours Dundalk.
Dundalk went into the game boasting the record of being the only team in the Premier to be unbeaten at home. They return to the dressing room tonight shocked by their defeat at the hands of the 9th position Drogs. Despite securing an 86th minute goal and fighting hard in the dying minutes, Dundalk failed to level the score and salvage a point before the final whistle. Nailbiting doesn’t come close to describing the last 7 minutes of this game (with 3 minutes of added time).
Whether it was the FAI Ford Cup 3rd round win against Mervue on Monday night, the fact that Mick Cooke has indicated that he will be shaking things up during the transfer window or perhaps the introduction of former Dundalk player Tiarnan Mulvenna into the Boyneside squad, the fact remains that this was a wholly more confident and purposeful United side that travelled to Oriel tonight.
Mick Cooke has to feel that the tide is finally turning.
Well done one and all.

Mick Cooke on tonight’s Louth Derby – Drogheda United v Dundalk, Hunky Dorys Pk, 7:45pm
Mick Cooke has no injury worries ahead of Friday night’s game. Alan McNally played 45 minutes against Bray last week and Cooke reckons it will be a big boost to his side to have McNally back.
“This will be my first as a Drogheda manager though I have played in it many times as a Drogheda player. You always check to see when the derby is on and i am certainly looking forward to it. It will not be an easy game, Dundalk are a full time outfit and are in the Setanta Cup final, which is testament to how much they have come on. The atmosphere should be electric and it’s always nice to have the bragging rights for a few weeks. The lads are up for this 110% and we will certainly look to put it up to Dundalk”.

Bray Wanderers 0 Drogheda United 1
The Drogs progressed into the second round of the EA Sports Cup with a 1-0 win over quite a strong Bray team. Mick Cooke rung the changes for this match with only two of Friday’s starting eleven in Sligo lining out. In came keeper Stephen Trimble, Robert Kovacsevics, Victor Ekanem, Mark Nolan, Jack Flynn, Philip McDonagh, Darragh Hanaphy, and Shaun Skelly. So we had almost a completely new team and it gave a chance to the supporters who made the trip (and Mick) to assess the overall strength of our squad. Besides having a new team, we also had a new strip, and it was great to see our team taking the field in our traditional colours of red and black. Well done to the back room staff for getting rid of the luminous yellow and the nondescript white.
Bray fielded a strong team with plenty of first-teamers and put us under all the early pressure and even though we flooded the midfield with Hanaphy above on his own, they created plenty of chances in the opening half hour with great work down the left by Jake Kelly and Shane O’Neill. We were decidedly lucky on 10 minutes when Massey rose unchallenged to head straight at Trimble. But gradually, keeper Trimble and Robert and Victor in the centre got a better grip on things and we started to get some possession in midfield and on 23 a great move saw Quigley find McDonagh in a great position, but his shot was headed away. Hanaphy improved as the game went on and held the ball up well for his midfielders.
So in a way we were lucky to be going in at halftime 0-0, but at the same time we were defending well and looked like we could make an impact on the game even though this was a first competitive outing for most of out team. Bray started off the second half well and Robert and Vic made some fine tackles when danger threatened. And what proved to be the winning goal came on the hour when good work between Costigan (a much-improved performance here) and McDonagh saw McDonagh send over a great cross and when the defender hesitated, Skelly finished the ball to the net.
This gave us renewed impetus and we had plenty of possession in the middle but failed to add to our lead. At the same time Bray pressed forward at every opportunity and keeper Trimble and Robert and Victor in the middle made timely clearances and tackles.
Our first competitive win, nothing to be sneezed at, and well done to the lads. A win is a win. Plenty of good performances throughout.
Drogheda United: Stephen Trimble; Stephen Quigley, Anthony Costigan, Robert Kovacsevics, Victor Ekanem; Mark Nolan, Stephen McCrossan, Jack Flynn, Philip McDonagh; Darragh Hanaphy (Dinny Corcoran, 85), Shaun Skelly (David Freeman, 73).
Subs not used: David Quirke, Brian Gannon, Mark O’Brien, Mark Griffin, Ger Sweetman.

Bohs 1 Drogs 0
After last week’s defeat to UCD, we travelled to Dalyier wondering how strong the Bohs would be – seeing as we ourselves are a work-in-progress. On paper they certainly looked strong at the back – Heary, Rossiter, Price and the ageless Ollie in front of Murphy – and so it was – with Bohs making good use of the big pitch in the early stages and putting us under pressure from the whistle.
David Quirke continued in goals for the Drogs and Philip Hand came in at left back, a problem area for us last week, and the game kicked off with Bohs putting on all the early pressure, and we conceded frees in dangerous positions outside the box which thankfully were well defended by us or Bohs took the wrong options. And after a good fifteen minutes of home pressure, we started coming back into the game and fought well to get a foothold in midfield, but it became clear after a while that our big problem was going to be in the final third. Darragh was involved only intermittently on the left wing and Freeman and Corcoran were unable to retain possession and seemed to have trouble moving on the big Dalymount pitch.
And so it went on to the half time whistle, Bohs missing chances and the Drogs unable to capitalise on the small amount of possession they had. The second half started with more Bohs pressure and the inevitable first goal came on 60 minutes when Flood deflected a cross from the right past Quirke with a cool flick of his right foot. This proved the decisive goal and ten minutes later, Quirke brilliantly deflected a Rossiter piledriver out of harm’s way. Try as we might, the only chance we created in the second half was from sub Colin O’Brien with a good shot from the edge of the box which just shaved the angle of the crossbar and upright 15 minutes from time.
The Verdict: A good team display, defence tighter than last week, Quirke had a good match, match-fitness seems to be an issue, as does our penetration in the final third, but it’s early days yet.
Team: Quirke, Gannon, Hand, McNally (Nolan), Whelan, Lester, Mark O’Brien, McCrosson, Freeman, Corcoran, McNamara (Colin O’Brien)
Subs not used: Trimble, Flynn, Skelly, Hanaphy, Ekanem

Drogheda United is delighted to announce the appointment of Mick Cooke as 1st team manager of the club.
Mick, who played for Drogheda United during the early 70s, re-joins the club from Monaghan United where he has proved his ability to get the very best from a team within tight budgetary constraints. He is one of the League of Ireland’s most experienced and respected managers.
The board of management of Drogheda United looks forward to working closely with Mick and his backroom staff to re-build the club both on and off the pitch.
Mick will be assisted by former Sporting Fingal coach, Robbie Horgan, who was one of Drogheda’s most popular goalkeepers during the late 80s/early 90s.

Drogheda United FC is delighted to have learned this morning that it has been granted a Premier Division licence for the 2011 season.
The club had made a strong case for its inclusion in the top-flight after last week receiving official notification that it was next in line to fill the vacancy left by Sporting Fingal.
With the potential for increased sponsorship, commercial interest and gate income that life in the premier division affords, and following a strong start to its share issue scheme which in under a month has yielded over €80K, those now running the club look forward to building a stable and successful future.
“Taking our place in this season’s premier division gives us a terrific opportunity to move on from the turbulent times of the past, assuming our share scheme maintains momentum up to the start of the season” said Jim Agnew, club Director. “We’ve worked hard over the last few months on plans to make the club self-sustaining and to place ownership in the hands of the supporters and our community. We may not be winning the league or anything like that for a while but by the beginning of the season we believe we can have a club that is structured, vibrant and, most importantly, financially stable. Hopefully the award of this licence will encourage more people to become involved in our project and will boost membership of our Claret & Blue Club.”
Season tickets for this season’s campaign are on-sale immediately on www.droghedaunited.ie or from the Drogheda United club house from next weekend.

Drogheda United confirms that it will accept a Premier Division licence if granted one following the meeting of the independent club licencing committee on Sunday next.
Internal discussions have taken place over the last number of days and the club has been adjusting its budget for Premier Division participation.
The club has been speaking with a number of interested parties over the last week and it is clear that their support is contingent upon Premier Division status which gives brands more exposure. Drogheda United is confident that if it keeps its playing budget at modest levels, increases commercial income and bolsters its recent share issue, that the club can be stabilised for once and for all. This will also enable the club to put key staff in place, work on long-term income streams and generally feel positive about its future.
