Under 19s Match Report: Derry City 2-1 Drogheda United

By Jim MacArdle

The Drogs were unlucky to lose this loosely fought encounter where the home stuck the winner with ten minutes to go.

David Harper and Emmet Carolan and keeper Harry Hogan were injured and James Carroll reverted to right full back with Kyle Molloy continuing at midfield.

Although there were chances on both sides, the game was at times a tough midfield and the Drogs midfield trio of Seery, Fitzsimons and Molloy showed the good mix of skill and physical toughness which is necessary in games like these.

With both sides fighting hard for control of midfield, the Drogs were rather unfortunate in the 15th minute when an attempted clearing header from captain Sean Tunney skewed off his head into the corner of his own net.

Stung by this reverse, the Drogs fought to get back into the game and in a beautiful move on 30 minutes, James Carroll fed Nathan Seery, who delivered a killer pass to Lee Partridge who slotted the ball past the home keeper for a deserved equaliser.

The Drogs were pressing well at this stage with Stephen Meaney denied the lead goal through a brave save from the home keeper and a Sam Reilly effort hitting the side netting.

The teams went in 1-1 at half time and the Drogs continued their pressing until 20 minutes into the second half when both Nathan Seery and Stephen Meaney went off injured to be replaced by Eoin Broughan and Sean Hughes. Sean Tunney was unlucky with a 20 minutes to go to see a great header just skim over the bar.

This gave the home team an added incentive and with 10 minutes to go they scored a breakaway winner when a Drogs attack broke down.

Drogheda United Team: Dylan Sweeney, James Carroll, Craig D’Arcy, Sean Tunney (Dylan Rice). Sam Reilly, Kyle Molloy, , Nathan Seery (Eoin Broughan), Karl Fitzsimons ,Stephen Meaney (Sean Hughes), Mark Doyle (Lee McGuinness), Lee Partridge.
