The Drogs Under 17s went down to a 4-0 home defeat to Sligo Rovers in sunny United Park on Saturday. This was a well drilled strong and skilful Sligo team who will take some beating in this competition. As early as the first minute Euan Niven made a brilliant point blank save from the centre forward and on 7 minutes he tipped a good shot over the bar and it was not until the 14th minute that the Drogs posed their first threat to the Sligo goal when good following up from Cian Hussey and the ever- lively Calum Leonard ended in a loose ball being headed with the keeper beaten.
The Drogs were finding it hard to get a foothold in the game with the visitors pressing high when the Drogs had possession at the back and the first goal came on 19 minutes when the Drogs conceded a free on the left outside the box and the ball was drilled to the net with a great free kick for the opening goal. On 27 minutes Calum Leonard turned smartly in the box but drilled his shot just wide. Euan Niven made a couple of smart saves on the half hour, but on 42 minutes the home defence paid dearly for indecision and the visitors were 2-0 up going in at half time.
Try as the Drogs might in the second half, even though they showed a marked improvement, they only created a few half chances as the visitors defence held firm and added to further goals before the final whistle, the third being a deflection which looped viciously over the keeper’s head and the fourth came from a well-taken free kick,
