Drogheda United will look to cut the gap on First Division leaders UCD when they face Wexford on Friday, kick-off 7.45pm at United Park.
The Drogs jumped back up to second in the table after they defeated Athlone Town 1-0 at Lissywollen last week.
Chris Lyons’ strike early in the second-half was enough to secure all three points with Drogs boss Tim Clancy pleased with his side’s response to their defeat against Finn Harps a fortnight ago.
“It was vital that we got the win,” Clancy explained Thursday morning. “We had to be really patient on the night, Athlone were well organised but I thought we could’ve moved the ball a bit quicker.
“It was important that we put some points on the board after the Harps defeat and hopefully this is the start of another run for us.”
Drogheda’s biggest win of the season came against Wexford back in March though Clancy is adamant that his side won’t have it easy on Friday.
“I think Athlone showed last week that the sides near the bottom are getting stronger as the season goes on.
“I know we had a big win at Ferrycarrig Park but Wexford will be determined to prove people wrong this time around.
“We need to focus on ourselves and set the tempo early on. We need to show the patience that we had last week.”
Drogheda have a full squad to choose from with no suspensions or injury concerns.
