Drogheda United have qualified for the promotion play-offs after they defeated Cobh Ramblers 2-0 at St Colman’s Park.
Goals from Sean Brennan and Luke Gallagher sealed Drogheda’s top four finish leaving Longford’s draw with UCD purely academic.
Drogheda United manager Tim Clancy made just one change from the side that defeated Longford Town last week as Brennan replaced William Hondermarck.
There was barely a minute on the clock when the visitors were awarded a penalty as Mark Doyle’ direct run was halted in the area with Brennan sending Paul Hunt the wrong way from the spot.
Drogheda controlled possession for the majority of the first-half but Cobh did threaten from set-pieces as Chris Hull’s header was cleared off the line.
The crucial second goal for the Boyneisders arrived early in the second-half as a corner-kick from the left was powered home by Luke Gallagher.
Hull went close to pulling a goal back for Cobh but Drogheda were comfortable throughout as they sealed their 14th league victory of the campaign.
The Drogs will now host Shelbourne in the first leg of the play-offs at United Park, October 5th before the return leg at Tolka Park on Monday, 8th of October with the winners then facing Finn Harps over two legs.
