The Drogs scored a good away victory on Tuesday night with three well-taken goals in a keenly contested game. The teams were evenly-matched all through, but superior finishing from William Woods and Colm Smyth proved decisive.
The Drogs applied all the early pressure, but it was the home side who swept down the field after 10 minutes forcing 'keeper Alex Reilly to make a great point-blank save. Then just a minute later William Woods gave the Drogs the lead when he rose to meet a great cross from the left and placed a looping header into the corner of the net. Alex again made a good saves on 18 and 36 minutes to keep the Drogs lead intact at half time.
The Drogs were forced into making a change when Conor Healy replaced the injured Stephen Larkin in the 23rd minute, then Kevin Ross was withdrawn at half time to be replaced by Derek Kierans.
Monaghan were still well in the game until William Woods put the result beyond doubt with a great strike on 75 minutes from a brilliant Philly Kavanagh cut-back . Colm Smyth scored a good third on 86 minutes to put a gloss on the win.
This was an impressive overall team display with Alex showing well in goals and the Drogs back four defending intelligently. Kevin Ross was strong and incisive in the first half and Philly Kavanagh, Jack Kierans and Stephen Campbell showed skill and tenacity in midfield.
