The midfielder became Drogheda United manager Pete Mahon’s first signing of the July transfer window having impressed in a friendly defeat to Ipswich Town.

Russell learned his trade at UCD where he made his league debut in 2010 playing for his father Martin as he established himself as a first-team regular for the Students.

The 23-year-old was on the move in 2014 as he joined First Division side Longford Town before moving to Shelbourne in July where they narrowly missed out on promotion.

He joined Limerick in 2015 where he made 32 league appearances, scoring twice as they suffered relegation via the play-offs before re-signing for the club the following April as they regained promotion back to the Premier Division.

Russell then decided to ply his trade Stateside as he joined Louisville City before returning to Ireland in June.
